Waldo Unruh
May 1, 1935 - December 15, 2020
WALDO UNRUH Waldo E. Unruh was born to Dewey and Mabel Unruh on May 1, 1935. He peacefully passed to his eternal home on December 15, 2020, due to complications resulting from a fall, reaching the age of 85 years. He was residing in the Kidwell Home in Versailles, Missouri. Dad was born in Haskell County, Kansas, and as a boy with his parents, lived at several places in Kansas before settling down at Scott City, Kansas. He received most of his education at the Gill School in Logan County, Kansas. As a family we moved to Versailles, Missouri in 1970, where he resided until his death. Dad was baptized by Lee Schultz at 15 years of age at Scott City, Kansas. He was joined in marriage to me, Edrie Koehn on December 11, 1955 at Fairview, Oklahoma. We enjoyed a union that lasted 65 years. We started out in an 8’ x 12’ trailer house, living in meager conditions. Life was not luxurious, but we were happy. This home was blessed with two daughters, Roberta and Nancy. We have many memories of home. Hailstorms at Scott City, Kansas tested our fortitude, and Dad loved the lush, green pastures of Missouri. We remember riding with him to check cattle and he would comment often on how he enjoyed this country. Handing Dad tools while he worked on equipment and doing chores around the farm were common activities for us daughters. Dad enjoyed good health most of his life, rarely going to the hospital, until the last few years. The farm was his livelihood all his working life, with hogs, chickens and cattle. He was given numerous responsibilities in church throughout his life. Many years were spent as song leader, which he really enjoyed. Dad loved to sing and really wanted to support the young men in their singing responsibilities. He was a spiritual leader and father in our congregation. It seemed like he was always ready to give of himself in whatever capacity he could in the workdays that we had as a congregation. We remember him as always being cheerful and upbeat, regardless of circumstance. Being on time was very important to him. Revivals always brought a seriousness and quietness to our home. Dad would initiate a time of sharing and clearing ourselves as a family. Those left behind are his loving wife, Edrie, Versailles, Missouri; daughter, Roberta and husband Allen Boese of Barnett, Missouri; daughter, Nancy and husband Merle Classen of Versailles, Missouri; 8 grandchildren, with their spouses; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Dennis Unruh and wife Rachel; 2 brothers-in-law, and 3 sisters-in-law. Preceding him in death are his parents, parents-in-law, 1 sister, 1 granddaughter, 3 brothers-in-law, and 1 sister-in-law. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Safe Haven Mennonite Congregation. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Friday at the church with the family receiving friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home of Versailles.
