Ted Akin

Ted Akin, age 86, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Friday, December 16, 2011, at St. Luke’s East in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. He was born May 15, 1925, in Akinsville, Missouri, the son of the late Dudley and Alma Lingle Akin. On June 11, 1946, in Kansas City, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Dixie Marriott, who survives of the home. He was an Army Air Force veteran serving his country in World War II. Ted was a carpenter for many years. Later, he worked for David Stephens at Stephens Sporting Goods in Versailles. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing Pitch. He was a member of the Versailles First Baptist Church, and a lifetime member of the Gravois Mills VFW Post 5178. In addition to Dixie, his wife of 65 years, he is survived by his son, Dean Akin and wife Patty of Kearney, Missouri; his daughters, Donna Mickeletto and husband Leo of Overland Park, Kansas and Lana Snurr and husband Dan of Belton, Missouri; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his brothers, Dwight Akin of Sedalia, Missouri, R.D. Akin and wife Charlotte of Independence, Missouri, Darrell Akin and wife Shirley of Rowlett, Texas, and Dudley Akin of Andalusia, Alabama; his sisters, Binford Fowler of Fortuna, Missouri, Yvonne Lieding of Atlanta, Georgia, and Phyllis Nester of Panama City, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Clifford Akin and Gaylord Akin, and his sister, Wilford Wilcox. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 20, at the Versailles First Baptist Church with Dr. Todd Forman officiating. Graveside services and interment with full military honors with Dan Snurr, Ted's son-in-law, playing Taps, will be held in the Versailles Cemetery. Nick Mickeletto, Ryan Akin, Justin Kirkman, Shelton Dray, Ben Anderson, and Gery Gonzalez will serve as casketbearers and Rob Cree, Julie Anderson, Erin Dray, Lindsay Cree, Kara Mickeletto, Blaine Silvey, and David Stephens will serve as honorary casketbearers. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the National Association of Senior Veterans or to the Versailles First Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home of Versailles.
