Marvin "Niner" Alvin Bellinghausen

On October 12, 1945, Marvin “Niner” Alvin Bellinghausen was born to Frank and Mary (Schoeppner) Bellinghausen in Carroll, Iowa. He grew up on a farm with 16 siblings in Maple River, Iowa. He attended St. Francis Catholic School and Church where he was baptized, completed 1st communion, and was confirmed. For some child fun-time, he became part of the softball team. He continued playing the sport all through High School. In 1963, he graduated from Carroll Kemper and worked for Ed Heinrichs and Virgil Baumhover as a carpenter. On September 8, 1965, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve. His first base was at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He became comrades with other men through his travels to Ft. Gordon, GA, San Francisco, CA, and his favorite place, Thailand. Marvin ran a crew of men, which built various types of buildings. The military enhanced his construction skills with some engineering, and electrical education. Some of the medals he earned were National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Expert (Rifle M-14). He received his honorable discharge on March 1, 1973. He was next off to find a second base to call home. Marvin was united in marriage to Joan “Pat” Patricia (Pedersen) on February 10, 1968, at the St. Lawrence Church in Carroll, Iowa; later divorced in August of 1985. They lived in Cedar Fall, IA, Iowa Falls, IA, Steamboat Rock, IA, and finally made his second base in Eldora, IA. They started a family and had two daughters Teresa Ann and Amy Marie. Marvin’s family spent much of their time playing softball, camping, hunting, fishing, keeping a garden, attending demo derbies, playing board games, and remodeling the house. He was the co-owner of Hardin Builders Construction Company, and the owner of The Wood Wizard and the Hawks Sports Club. The American Legion, Men’s Bowling Association, Card Club, and the Wildlife Club were a few of the associations he enjoyed with his buddies. One of his biggest passions was playing fast pitch softball. This was where he was affectionately given the name “Niner” by his teammates. He was one of the best pitchers around! The Lake of the Ozarks area became Marvin’s third base to call home. He met his close friend Marge Colvin and her family in October of 1990, and lived in Laurie, MO. He worked as a general contractor until 2003, when he had difficulty with his knees. Although on disability, he kept busy as the general manager and maintenance man of Oakridge Apartments. He stayed in touch with nature and would sit on the porch with Sophie, his little dog. They would feed the birds, some special quail, and deer that grew fond of him. Occasionally, a special little girl, Keisha, would challenge him to a dice game, “Yazzel.” Marvin was very lucky and won a 4-wheeler in a 2001 Marlboro contest and the “party van” in a Lions Club drawing. Due to Marvin’s declining health, he was sent to our heavenly home on February 2, 2008, at the age of 62. And now “Niner”, since you have hit your home run, you will return to the almighty pitcher’s mound where you can be our shining star once again. Marvin is survived by two daughters, Teresa Ann Biehn and husband Jeff with children, Emily and Zackery of Newton, IA, and Amy Vanderheiden and husband Tony of Pilot Mound, IA, with step-children, Chessa, TJ, Heather, Aaron, and Danielle; his close friend, Marge Colvin of Laurie, MO; seven sisters, Alvina Beyer of Cebring, FL, Mary Marvin Bellinghausen of Carroll, IA, Cindy Irlbeck of Carroll, IA, Jeanette Brown and husband Don of Carroll, IA, Marlene Nelson and husband Edward of Milford, IA, Mary Bowlan of Carroll, IA, and Angel and Bob Henkenius of Carroll, IA; one brother, Wayne Bellinghausen and wife Sharon of Carroll, IA; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bellinghausen and husband Alvin of Maple River, IA, and Polly Bellinghausen and husband Ron of Mason City, IA; one brother-in-law, Wesley Ohde and wife Delores; former wife, Joan Patricia Pedersen; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, four brothers, Alvin, Ron, Dominic, and Leonard; four sisters, Loretta, Hyacinth, Dolores, and Viola; two brothers-in-law, Leon Irlbeck and Raymond Beyer; and one sister-in-law, Florence. A memorial visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 9, at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Laurie with full military honors provided by the American Legion Zack Wheat Post 624 at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Iowa.
