Lois Virginia Burris

Mrs. Lois Virginia Burris was one of five children; her parents William “Bill” Tutt & Belle Chism-Tutt welcomed her into the world on October 14, 1913, in Versailles, Missouri. Lois accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of the United Methodist Church, in California, Missouri. Lois also enjoyed being a frequent attendee of the Second Baptist Church in Versailles. She attended school in Versailles, Sedalia, and graduated from high school in St. Louis, Missouri. Lois was united in marriage on February 10, 1942, to Lawyer Burris, they were blessed to have shared 60 years of marriage, and she remained his devoted wife until his death on May 13, 2001. Lois truly loved being a part of the Versailles community. She enjoyed meeting people, socializing, farming, gardening, and had a delightful passion for fishing. Lois volunteered for many different organizations, but one that she was most proud of was having had the opportunity of transporting African Americans from all over Missouri to register and to vote during the Civil Rights movement. Lois remained in Versailles until her health began to fail, and in July of 2010, she decided to move to Chicago, Illinois, to live with her great-niece, Sherri Tutt. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Harry Tutt, Jessie Tutt, Leatha Tutt and Edna Tutt. She leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews: Lorenzo Tutt, Sr. and his wife Julia of Kansas City; Lorenzo Tutt, Jr. of Joplin; Lorenzo Tutt, III of. St. Louis; Latoi Works, of St. Louis; Katrina McCoy, of Kansas City; Evelyn Jones, of Kansas City; Edmond Brooks, of Sanford, North Carolina; Flora Richardson, of Kansas City; Sherri Tutt, of Chicago, Illinois; Larry Burris of Kansas City; Nancy Burris, Sharon Buckingham, Brenda Wheeler, and Jeff Burris, all of Versailles, Linda Hinson of North Las Vegas, Pamela Ferguson of Jefferson City, Reverend Robert Ross of Versailles; Phillip Ross of San Diego, CA; Harland Ross of Jefferson City; sister-in-law: Luvenia Burris of Tipton, and many other loving family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, July 16, at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles with the Reverend Helen Payne officiating. Graveside services and interment will follow in the Versailles Cemetery with Lorenzo Tutt, Jr., Lorenzo Tutt III, Dorsey Caviness, Jeff Burris, Mike Daulton, and Joseph Woods serving as casketbearers. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon, Saturday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home of Versailles.
