John Thomas Gunther

John Thomas Gunther, age 79, of Sunrise Beach, passed away Friday, May 30, 2014, at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach. He was born March 2, 1935, in Le Mars, Iowa, a son of the late Claire and Mary Frances (Marx) Gunther. On August 10, 1960, in Le Mars, he was united in marriage to his surviving wife, Janet (Mueller) Gunther. John was a graduate of Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa and received post graduate degrees from the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was a lifelong educator and retired from Loess Hills Area Education Agency 13 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. John was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Laurie, Knights of Columbus and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. John was a veteran of the United States Army. In his spare time, he enjoyed stained glass, fishing, boating and cheering on his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes. Most of all, he loved his family and treasured the time he spent with them. In addition to his wife, Janet, he is survived by his sons, John Gunther and wife Rhonda of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Joseph Gunther and wife Cathy of Libertyville, Illinois and Jay Gunther and wife Jennifer of McClelland, Iowa; daughters, Jennifer Gunther of Grayslake, Illinois and Jeanne Johnson and husband Trevor of Doniphan, Nebraska; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his brothers, Claire “Bic” Gunther and wife Beverly of Lampe, Missouri, Jim Gunther and wife Sue of Le Mars, Iowa, Mark Gunther and wife Barb of Muscatine, Iowa and Doug Gunther and wife Connie of Escondido, California and many other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Phil Gunther and his sister, Molly Embernate. The family thanks the doctors and staff at Lake of the Ozarks Regional Health System, Lake Regional Cardiac Rehabilitation, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, and Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs for the excellent care provided to John. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 6th, at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Laurie with Father Patrick Dolan and Father Larry Hoffman concelebrating. Graveside services and interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Friday, at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Patrick Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kidwell-Garber Laurie/Sunrise Beach Chapel.
