Hunter Martha

Martha M. Hunter, age 85, of Versailles, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City. She was born January 7, 1923 in Sarcoxie, MO, a twin daughter of Henry Nelson and Georgia Westover McCall. She was united in marriage on February 5, 1947 with William Carroll Hunter in Columbia, MO. She enlisted in the U.S. Naval Service as a wave after attending her third year of college and was stationed in Hawaii. She returned home and received an arts education teaching degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia. Mrs. Hunter taught art for the Morgan County R-II School District and later second grade. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Versailles and United Methodist Church in Gravois Mills when the Hunters made their home there in the late seventies. They were active members of the Gravois Mills Lions Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Her favorite activities included attending auctions, feeding hummingbirds and collecting stamps. She enjoyed taking long walks, seeing wildlife and could always find bouquets of four leaf clovers. She would often ride with her grandson Jeremiah in his dump truck into her early eighties. She occupied herself with word search puzzles, drinking tea and being with family. She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and three brothers. She is survived by one son, Ed Hunter and wife Kathy, of Excelsior Springs, MO; three daughters, Margie Ruder and husband Tom, of Wichita, KS, Jane Napier and husband Ron, of Tipton, Becky Callaghan and husband Marty, of Versailles; fourteen grandchildren, Danny and Bobby Haggerman, Clint Napier and wife Shannon, Christy Proctor and husband Myles, Amanda Garrison and husband Jeremy, Grant and Kari Hunter, Carolyn, Jeremiah, and wife, Krista, Marie, Michael, and Mahala Callaghan, Jorie and Jason Ruder; and eight great-grandchildren; one half sister Opal Rider of Kansas, and one half brother Floyd Southern of Pittsburg, KS; one sister, Margaret Murphy of Butler, Missouri, many other relatives and friends. A celebration of life funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 11, 2008 at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles with John Wagner officiating. Military honors and interment under the auspices of the American Legion Zack Wheat Post #624 of Sunrise Beach will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Versailles. Casketbearers will be Jeremiah Callaghan, Jeremy Garrison, Jeremy Handtke, Clint Napier, Bob Haggerman, and Michael Callaghan. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M.
