Helen Carter

HELEN CARTER Helen Louise Carter, 91, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2024 at Good Shepherd Care Center, Versailles Missouri. Born in Depue, Illinois, she was the daughter of Marc and Susan Van Cleave. She graduated from Depue High School in 1951. She was the widow of Blake Frederick Carter with whom they shared 59 years of marriage together. Helen’s greatest joys were her abundant pride for her family, her church, playing the piano, spending time with friends, enjoying a good book and a game of Bridge. Helen is fondly remembered by many for her volunteer work in the community, bright smile and love of McDonald’s iced frappes. Of the many jobs Helen had over her lifetime, being the librarian in Vandalia Missouri was her most treasured. Little one’s in the community (including her own grandchildren) benefited from the love of reading she shared with them at children's story time over the years. In 2010 Helen and Blake relocated to Versailles, Missouri. They were blessed to move into a home remodeled by their son, Jeff and his dear friend Ted Nachbar. After Jeff and Blake’s passing, the house was a comfort and reminder to Helen of Jeff's love and she treasured living there. Helen was fortunate to live around the corner from her daughter-in-law, Kathy. They enjoyed happy times attending Versailles United Methodist Church together, many shopping trips and traveling to Florida to see family. Helen was a woman of great faith and the family is comforted by knowing she has entered Heaven and is reunited with her loved ones. She is survived by her children, Mark Carter (Tom), Bruce Carter (Beth) and daughter-in-law, Kathy Carter; grandchildren, Bryan Carter, Greg Carter, Michelle Dinwiddie, Bridget Miller, William Carter, Olivia Carter and Andrew Carter and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Blake Carter (2012) and her son, Jeff Carter (2012). A graveside service and inurnment will be held at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, November 16, 2024 at Versailles Cemetery. The family is truly grateful for the loving care that was provided to Helen by the Good Shepherd Care Center during the final years of her life.
