Gary A. Smith

GARY SMITH Gary A. Smith, age 76, of Versailles, Missouri, passed away, August 6, 2020 at his home after a lengthy, painful struggle due to an accident in 1993. Gary is now free of the pain he has endured for so many years. He was born in Springfield, Missouri to Kenneth and Violet Smith on November 5, 1943. Gary lived his life loving to serve people in many ways. His passion was law enforcement in which he began his law enforcement career as a young man. Gary also worked for Continental Trailways and Tiona Truckline. Gary always said the thing that made him happiest was to be able to share with those who had a need. He very freely shared with people not out of sympathy but out of love and he was often heard saying, “I can’t take it with me so I want to share what God has allowed me to have.” He endured physical pain for many years but felt he was blessed in many ways. Gary was a member of The Versailles Church of Christ and very passionate about the souls of the people he met inside and outside of the church. Gary is survived by Brenda Smith of the home; a son, Gary A. Smith, Jr. (Tiffany) of St. Peters, Missouri; three step-sons, Mike Stotlemyre (Anna) of Chillicothe, Ohio, Eric Homan (Carrie) of Sedalia, Missouri and Mark Homan (Tammy) of Sedalia, Missouri; grandchildren, Stephen Smith, Jenna Smith, Justin Mueller (Rachel), Carl Franklin Taylor (Kelly); a great-granddaughter; nine step-grandchildren; extended grandsons, Cory, Brody, Bryce and Brayden; a special aunt, Lucy and cousin Cindy (Bill) of Springfield, Missouri; brother-in-law, Bill Combs of Jefferson City, Missouri and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Eve Meuller Sauerwein; brother, Kenny Smith; step-daughter, Debra Upham; brother-in-law, Jim Combs and Whitey and Juanita Combs whom he loved dearly and considered to be his “other” parents. A special thank you to Dr. Wouters and his staff at Hermitage Medical Clinic, Hospice Compassus, Dr. Brenda Nairin, D.C. and the Versailles Pharmacy for your assistance with disability, pain and suffering. A special thank you to Keith Homan and P.J. Franse for their willingness to assist on a moment’s notice. A special thank you to a dear friend and brother in Christ, Dave Roberts. Also, to the “circle of friends” in the Hermitage Community who helped in so many ways and dear friends since being back to our home in Versailles. Graveside services with social distancing being observed, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, August 13, 2020 at Versailles Cemetery. Due to Covid-19 concerns, in lieu of a traditional visitation, friends may call at the funeral home to sign the guest book and pay respects from noon to 3:30 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home (the family will not be present). Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Compassus. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home of Versailles.
