Durbin Edward Shipp

It is with profound sadness and treasured memories that we announce the unexpected passing of Durbin Edward Shipp, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Born on June 1, 1943, in Windsor, Missouri, Durbin passed at his lake home of 23 years on June 6, 2026, at the age of 83. Durbin was the cherished son of Edward Richard Shipp and Lillie Belle (Durbin) Shipp, who preceded him in death. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through his surviving family: his beloved wife of 58 years, Carol Lee (Burris) Shipp; his daughters, Rebecca Marie Shipp and Heidi Elizabeth Shipp Saba (Don); his adored grandchildren, Daniel Durbin Mullins (Kelsey), Morgan Elizabeth Morris, Madeline Marie Saba, and Michael James Saba; and his precious great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Carol and Beau Durbin. Durbin is also survived by his sister, Sara Sue Hoecker, his nieces Carolyn Luedtke (Pehr) and Anne Hoecker (Pete), and his sister-in-law, Carla (Burris) Massey, along with her sons Matthew, Brandon, and Shawn. His extended family, including numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, will miss him dearly. Durbin was a graduate of Windsor High School in 1961, where he graduated as an Eagle Scout (Order of the Arrow) and was especially proud of his God and Country Award. Durbin furthered his education at the University of Central Missouri, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management in 1969. He played basketball and football in high school (his basketball team was legendary) and football in college before he joined the Army. His journey included honorable service in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966, where he reached the rank of E-5 and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, at the Headquarters for the U.S. Army in Europe, garnering numerous medals and honors. Durbin embarked on a successful career in business, beginning with Butler Manufacturing in Kansas City, followed by distinguished tenures at the Ithaca Gun Company in Cameron, MO, and Ithaca, NY. He retired as the Supply Chain Manager from the Quaker Oats Company after more than 20 years combined in Danville, IL, and St. Joseph, MO. He and Carol’s dream was to spend their retirement at the Lake of the Ozarks where they moved in 2003. A man of deep faith, Durbin was a member of the Westlake Christian Church in Laurie, MO. His life was enriched by his passion for sports, particularly basketball, auto racing, and football. He delighted in attending and hosting family gatherings, proudly sharing stories, pictures and videos of his children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's activities and accomplishments. A dedicated community member, he served as the President of his neighborhood HOA for 20 years and still went on snake patrol, among other things, regularly. He enjoyed tinkering with and restoring his blue Camaro convertible which he ordered immediately upon his return from Germany. He spent a lot of his time working daily and tirelessly on projects at the lake house, walking his dog and hosting vibrant and shockingly awesome 4th of July celebrations complete with fireworks so large he may have instilled an annual fireworks competition from several coves over at the Lake. Durbin's intellect and love for history and trivia were matched only by his kindness and willingness to help others. His wisdom and guidance were a beacon for his family, and his patriotic spirit was unwavering. He loved God, his family and his country. Durbin's memory will be cherished by all who knew him. He spoke daily of his pride in his family and the joy he found in their frequent visits. Holidays were moments of reflection and happiness for him, and he knew he and Carol were truly blessed. His heart and soul are now at peace, surrounded by the enduring love of his family and friends. A service celebrating Durbin's life will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, 417 Silvey Road, Laurie, MO, followed by a graveside service at Laurel Oak Cemetery in Windsor, MO, at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his favorite charities: Tunnels 2 Towers and St. Jude's Children's Hospital in honor of Durbin Shipp. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kidwell-Garber Laurie/Sunrise Beach Chapel.
