Donald Eugene Lurz

DONALD EUGENE “RED” LURZ Donald Eugene Lurz, age 86, went to be with the Lord on December 16, 2019. He was surrounded by family and peacefully passed in hospice care at Windsor Estates, Camdenton, Missouri. He was born on October 28, 1933 in Streator, Illinois to Jacob and Leta Lurz and grew up with one brother, Bob Lurz and two sisters, Kitty Hollis and Joni Roscoe. Don served in the Unites States Navy from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War on the U.S.S. Towhee as an engine mechanic. He often referred to this as the best time of his life. Donald “Red” Lurz married the love of his life, Mary Alice Bellows on August 10, 1957 and settled down in Batavia, Illinois where they began to grow their family. Don owned and operated HESS Construction in Batavia, Illinois until the Lurz family moved to Sunrise Beach, Missouri in 1971. They loved and enjoyed the lake so much, they became full-time residents. Don owned and operated Don Lurz Construction until he retired in the year 2000. Don thoroughly enjoyed teaching his trade to the younger generation of which he trained many young men. Don enjoyed fishing on the Lake of the Ozarks and passing that skill down to his daughters as he took them on many trips running his trot line, trolling for bass and seeing how many crappie they could catch off of one minnow. He also enjoyed teaching them to water ski and made countless right-hand turns pulling them skiing in Sagamo cove. Once his family was grown, Don and Mary made countless trips to the Caribbean with family and friends. They left hundreds of pictures to share with family as a memory to the joy they experienced while traveling. Don fiercely loved his family and could be found attending their many sporting events, dance recitals, birthdays and graduations. He especially loved all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was proud of how many he had accumulated. Don is survived by daughters, Debbie Carnahan and husband Tim and Cindy Slenker and husband Jerome all of Camdenton, Missouri; sister, Joni Roscoe of Big Rock, Illinois; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren as well as many precious nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 20, 2019 at Kidwell Garber Laurie/Sunrise Beach Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow in Garber Memorial Estates, Laurie, Missouri. Visitation will be from 10:00–11:00 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Lunch will be served to family and friends directly following the burial at Lake Christian Academy. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Donald E. Lurz. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Kidwell-Garber Laurie/Sunrise Beach Chapel.
