Carroll R. Smith

Carroll R. Smith, age 82, of Sunrise Beach, passed away Friday, July 5, 2013, at his home. He was born August 18, 1930, in Fairfax, Missouri a son of the late Mildred Diggs. On January 15, 1952, in Berryville, Arkansas, he was united in marriage to his surviving wife, Helen Watson Smith. Carroll was a United States Air Force veteran. He was very dedicated and devoted to his country. He was a master craftsman, a patriot and most importantly, a very devoted and loving family man who treasured each moment spent with his family. Some of his favorite hobbies included: boating, fishing, camping, traveling and singing. He always had a song to sing and especially loved old country music. Carroll was a member of the Montgomery Baptist Church in Camdenton, the Osage Community Elks Lodge #2705 in Laurie, the American Legion Zack Wheat Post 624 in Sunrise Beach, the Ararat Shrine in Kansas City, Missouri and served as scoutmaster for Troop #133 in Kansas City for many years. In addition to his wife, Helen of 61 years, he is survived by his children, Deborah Kay Reed and husband Rich of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Dee Smith of Sunrise Beach, Vickie Carol McElhany and husband Bud of Peculiar, Missouri, Mark Joseph Smith and wife Susan of Peculiar, Missouri and Rhonda Lea Burgess and husband Joe of Kaiser, Missouri; fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; brothers, Glenn Diggs and wife Margaret of North Kansas City, Missouri and Larry Diggs of Maitland, Missouri; sisters, Alice Stegall of Troy, Kansas, Nancy Yowell and husband Albert of St. Joseph, Missouri and Judy Diggs of Mound City, Missouri; several nieces and nephews and many friends. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard Eldon “Rick” Smith, grandchildren, Stephanie Marie Lancaster and Trae Joseph Smith and brothers, Kenneth Diggs and Sheldon Diggs. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 8th, at the Kidwell-Garber Laurie/Sunrise Beach Chapel with Pastor Jack Kirkham officiating. Graveside services and interment will follow in the Garber Memorial Estates Cemetery in Laurie. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Haley’s Helpers, 1252 Grand Pointe Blvd., Sunrise Beach, Missouri 65079 with checks payable to "First Down for Down Syndrome". Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kidwell-Garber Laurie/Sunrise Beach Chapel.
